Santa Barbara Zoo

One of the finest small zoos in the United States, the Santa Barbara Zoo and the Zoological Gardens are loved by locals as well as visitors. With about 500 animals, including 160 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and insects the zoo has lots to see including sea lions, farm animals, a variety of exotic bird species, giraffes, elephants, and lions.

This oceanside zoo also has a playground for kids and also a fun train ride on a miniature train. The zoo is also a great place for a picnic. There is a miniature train ride, children's playground, snack bar and spacious picnic area.

Santa Barbara Historical Museum

Exhibits at the Santa Barbara Historical Museum include new and permanent collections that cover a range from ancient times and the Native Americans to modern items including historic maps, photos, and rare manuscripts.

Also offered by the Santa Barbara Historical Museum are two different historic home tours. These include the Trussell-Winchester Adobe on Saturdays from 1 pm to 3 pm and Sunday from 12 pm to 5 pm, and the Fernald Mansion on Saturdays at 1 pm and 2 pm. 

The Santa Barbara Historical Museum is located at 136 E. De la Guerra Street and is open from 10 am to 5 pm from Tuesday to Saturday, and from 12 noon to 5 pm on Sunday. 

Guided tours are offered on Saturdays at 2 pm. Call (805) 966-1601 for more information. 

Santa Barbara Botanic Garden

This lovely botanical park includes about sixty-five acres of plants and trees native to the area including beautiful wildflowers, native shrubs, and cactus species. More than five miles of nature trails allow you to explore and discover. 

You can also see a dam whose history dates back to 1806 when the Chumash constructed under the supervision of the missionaries. 

As a scientific and educational institution, the Botanic Garden has a focus of education as well as research and conservation, stewardship of the land, and also a sense of history.

The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is located at 1212 Mission Canyon Road. The Botanic Gardens are open from 9 am to 5 pm from November to February, and from 9 am to 6 pm from March to October.

Guided tours of Santa Barbara Botanic Garden are offered daily at 2 pm with an extra 11 am tour on weekends. Call (805) 682-4726 for more information.

Santa Barbara Museum of Art

Established in 1941, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art shows permanent as well as visiting exhibits. From Asian and Latin American Art to North American and European Art, the Museum has a diversity of fine paintings on display. 

The Ancient Art section is notable, and the Asian Art includes Tibetan and Indian art as well as Japanese and Chinese art. Also notable are the works of International Modernism as well as the American art from both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Also shown at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art are prints, drawings, and photographic images. An interactive gallery provides fun for children. There is also a lovely cafe and Museum Store. 

The Santa Barbara Museum of Art is open from 11am-5pm from Tuesday through Sunday, with tours given daily at both 12 noon and 1 pm.
